10 Things That Ruin Your Mental and Physical Health

According to reports, the overall health of this generation is constantly falling. Obesity is at an all-time high and people are more depressed than ever. The average American has poor mental and physical health.

We’re not only sick physically but mentally as well. There is a dire need to make a move and make this world a healthy and happy place.

Let’s have a look at what’s causing us to have poor mental and physical health:

#1 Bad Relationships

It’s nice to have friends and good relationships but being in the wrong relationship can cause havoc in your life. Just because someone is family doesn’t mean you need to have a relationship with them. So many people continue to stay in toxic relationships, afraid to cut ties with someone that is not beneficial for their life, but the truth is keeping that person around can be som serious damage to your mental and physical health.

You will not only feel sad and depressed when they are around but may also feel lonely and get low confidence. This is why it is important that you only maintain healthy relationships.

Sometimes you’re stressed because of relationships with people you can’t eliminate from your life or maybe your best friend lives on the other side of the country. Such relationships can cause stress unless you know how to keep a long distance relationship healthy and happy.

#2 Being a Couch Potato

There is no harm in watching TV. We all love our regular dose of Game of Thrones and Friends but being a couch potato is not the answer.

Watch your favorite shows but make sure to take out time for other activities as well including working out. Experts suggest that watching television for more than two hours a day can lead to fatigue and other such problems that will affect your mental and physical health.

Plus, TV viewing can also be a cause of stress, especially watching news and reality shows. This is why you need to be careful about what you watch on TV.

#3 Not Sleeping Enough

Insomnia is one of the biggest problems out there today. In fact, about 35% of the US population is said to suffer from some form of insomnia which keeps them awake and can be the cause of serious mental and physical health issues as well including hypertension.

According to experts, you need to sleep for at least seven to eight hours per day. The sleep should be uninterrupted and ideally at night. A lack of sleep can cause you to get stressed and even lose concentration, which can have a serious impact on your professional and personal life as well.

#4 Being Overweight

According to reports, about 40% of the US population is obese or overweight. These include not just adults but children as well.

Obesity is a serious disease. In fact, it can lead to organ failure, weak bones, hypertension, and even cardiac arrest. This is why it is important to commit to losing weight and staying healthy.

There are several things you can do to lose weight, from turning to the right diet to hitting the gym. Something as simple as a morning jog can help you get in shape and help your mental and physical health.

Remember that the right weight depends on a number of factors including your gender and age. So work around it and make sure to be fit and healthy.

#5 Not Socializing

Humans are social animals. We value human interaction and cannot survive without it. This is why it is important to make friends, go out, chill, and relax. However, some of us are antisocial and do not like to mingle with others.

While it may not sound like much of a problem, it can be a very serious issue for your mental and physical health in the long-run. So make it a point to mingle with others and make friends. You can relax with your cousins, colleagues, neighbors, etc.

However, remember to be careful about who you call your friend. You cannot go around meeting people just for the sake of it. Your friends should be positive, ideally like-minded people, so that you can actually have something to talk about.

Joining communities can also be a good idea and an easy way to find people who share the same experience as you.

#6 Drinking

The opinion on drinking seems to be divided. While some believe drinking has health benefits, some think it can cause havoc in your life. All said and done, one glass of wine a day is okay but anything above this limit can lead to addiction or serious health consequences. If you are drinking more than 3 drinks a day or drinking throughout the day,  make sure to reduce your alcohol consumption. Drinking too much can do serious damage to your mental and physical health.

#7 Not Having a Proper Schedule

Work on a routine and make sure to stick to it. A proper schedule can reduce stress and make you more energetic and positive towards life, which is much better for your mental and physical health.

Stay early in the morning, sleep on time, and know when to eat. Plus, having a proper schedule would also ensure you do everything on time and never miss on anything.

#8 Counting too Much on Technology

We live in a technologically advanced era. While it makes life easier, the truth is that technology can actually make us lazier, resulting in weight gain, depression, withdrawing from your family, and other such issues. Don’t reply on Facebook to be your only social interaction with people. Being a recluse can have a serious impact on your mental and physical health.

#9 Smoking

Smoking is the #1 cause of lung cancer. It’s an addiction that does not only harm you but others around you as well, so make sure to reduce smoking and turn to a healthy lifestyle. I can’t believe how many people I still see smoking this day and age! I feel like everyone should know better by now. Not only is smoking a disgusting habit, it’s bad for your mental and physical health too.

#10 Being Overworked
